As Oakland approaches what could be the final court hearing in the longest-running federal police oversight case in the nation, a new city position is emerging as a key part of what comes next.
Thank you for that clarification, Sean, and for managing a very common sense sub stack site. It’s astonishing, how oblivious Oakland voters have been for 60 years, electing complete incompetents to run their city. I grew up there from 1956 to 1968 when it was a beautiful, safe and well- run city. Unless Mindy is elected mayor, there is no chance Oakland will rebound from implosion. It’s been in a doom loop for years, and will likely end up like Detroit in our lifetimes.
I still love the town, but I have very little hope for a turnaround.

I would very much like to know what our police officers think about this new position of Constitituional Policing Administrator. To me it seems Oakland has too many people overseeing the overseeing. My thinking is we need hands on and not so such a political beaucracy. We are wasting tax payers money. Mindy Pechenuk, for Oakland Mayor.
I have heard good feedback from OPD staff with regards to their interactions and contributions from the Constitutional Policing Administrator. Phillips told the court in January: "I believe Chief Beere sees me as an advisor. He's told me plenty of times, Michelle, I really want your recommendations. Let's sit down and let's talk. And that is for the entire command staff. They seek out guidance. They seek out my subject matter expertise in this work, which for me, speaks to the fact that we have really started to see some cultural change because they're invested holistically into these reform efforts."
Just another useless layer of bureaucracy designed to weaken the police department even further, with the inevitable result: MORE CRIME. And another DEI hire adding to a long list of continuing incompetence, decade after decade.
The only hope Oakland has is to elect a real mayor to clean house once and for all. Mayor Mindy.
Hi Rex — Thank you for your comment. The constitutional policing administrator position hasn’t been permanently filled yet. The assistant city administrator is covering the new role on an interim basis, in addition to her regular duties, until the recruitment for the permanent position is completed. It seems likely that the city wanted to have someone acting in the role during the run-up to next month’s federal court session that could potentially end the NSA. Based on the judge’s positive comments about the new constitutional policing role, having an administrator in place, even an interim one, seems wise from the perspective of securing a decision to end the NSA. Just what Broakland needs. After 20 years of a million-dollar-a-year federal administrator, we'll get a city replacement complete wtaxpayer-paid pension and salary. Wow. Meanwhile, we have the nation's highest property crime rate, and the state's highest homicide rate. You just can't make this stuff up.
