New audit finds the city let business taxes go uncollected. Meanwhile the city sits on hundreds of vacant positions, claims “extreme fiscal necessity,” and aims to increase taxes on homeowners.
You gotta ask why you don't see these stories in OaklandSuicide, or the Comical. (The former has complicit political agenda, the latter is a "beloved" restaurant review with no East Bay coverage. EB Times doesn't have the $ or ability.)
Roland -- Thank you for your comment. I have learned first hand how bias works in the media through selective coverage -- a particularly insidious form of media bias. There are far too many media outlets whose primary aim is to be a part of, or to gain access to the existing power structure. On the one hand this is understandable because proximity to power equals influence, and influence can be converted to money and thus more power and influence. On the other hand, every compromise, every pulled punch, every sly editorial remark masquerading as news, takes them one step farther away from the truth and one step deeper into complicity with the power structure they purport to hold accountable.
People are afraid of real thought leaders who have no fear.
I noticed this guy has me blocked, which I find amusing, because very few people have challenged Soggyside, or the local media more directly than I have. Most people whisper privately. I say it publicly and put my name on it.
There’s an old saying: people will forgive you for being wrong, but they won’t forgive you for proving them wrong.
My guess? Since I don’t even know this guy personally, I was probably right about something, and he couldn’t handle it.
It’s unbelievable how badly Oakland is run, and the worst part is that none of it is surprising anymore. And even worse is that both of the measures will most likely pass. 🤬
I really thought Oakland would be smart enough to vote for Loren instead of Barbara.
Barbara said, "Oakland is not a broken city" which we know is completely laughable. She is not willing to face the fact that our city is broken. When leaders dont face facts, they are not the right people to craft solutions.

The irony, of course, is that many of those we refer to, think of themselves as rebels.

“Failure to collect business tax” = one small, if temporary, break for what’s left of Oakland’s businesses.
Maybe that will weigh against the fact they and their customers don’t receive the services they’re paying for and are liable to be robbed at anytime.
How difficult is it to run for office in Oakland? This failure of leadership can be voted out. Because I’d run if I knew how.
