Great article, Rajni! “we the people” voted for specifics in measure NN, yet it was immediately taken away from “we” and given to a private commission (?) and THEY are going to sub-out what they are incapable of doing!!! Outrageous!

“More than 70% of [Oakland’s] voters” are gullible fools. And they like it that way.

Definitely - they forgot how the city played this game when we voted for Measure Y. An Oakland resident, Marleen Sacks, attempted to sue the city because they were collecting taxes when the police staffing level was not met.

I didnt vote for NN and was disappointed it passed.

I was also disappointed that Barbara Lee was elected mayor.

Thanks Rajni for this crucial article. Measure NN will destroy Oakland, not make it safe. Mindy Pechenuk, candidate for Oakland Mayor 2026

Thank you, Mr. Mandal, for writing about our commission! You are right that this commission has way more power than the prior commission and with that power comes tremendous responsibility, as well as a need for accountability.

The five of us who are commissioners, all volunteers with a broad range of experience, take this responsibility very seriously and welcome all questions and ideas from media and community members. If you would like to interview any of us directly, please reach out to Felicia Verdin, our staff member from the city, at FVerdin@oaklandca.gov, and she can help us schedule.

Also, we invite you and all community members to attend our monthly meetings that take place on the third Monday of the month from 6-9pm at City Hall. Our next meeting is tomorrow (11/17). This is the best way to learn what we are actually doing and why, as well as to let us know your honest criticisms and concerns. Once we have a draft of the four-year plan ready, we will hold public input sessions in each district, and I can share those dates when we have them.
