Oakland Report is expanding with Newsstand
Oakland Report is an experiment in a new form of media: deep-dive, data-driven reporting and analysis on the decision-making that affects Oaklanders’ lives.
Building on the success of our signature original articles, today we’re launching Newsstand, a daily roundup of Oakland news and stories from across the spectrum — a one-stop destination for our readers to keep abreast of what’s happening in The Town.
In today’s fragmented media environment, it’s challenging to keep up with local news — especially here in Oakland. Clicking through dozens of sites to scrape together a complete understanding of Oakland’s vibrant, complex scene is a time-consuming and, frankly, painful process.
Newsstand curates and highlights news items to help Oaklanders quickly understand the issues and events that affect our lives.
We review over 200 publications for items that our readers want to know or may find interesting, especially on the local topics we cover in Oakland Report: government, politics, public safety, business, schools, arts and culture. We also accept suggestions from readers.
Newsstand’s headlines are written by Oakland Report editors. We link; we don’t republish. No article text is reproduced in Newsstand. Follow each link to read the original reporting at its source.
How is Newsstand funded?
We're glad you asked. We rely on donations from readers like you. Oakland Report is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in beautiful Oakland, California. (Citizens Oakland, federal tax ID #99-4577680.)
One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to producing Oakland Report's original articles and maintaining Newsstand. If you like our work, please consider signing up for a monthly or one-time donation.
Our goal is to restore accountability journalism to Oakland. As we continue to grow through new ventures like Newsstand, we also take on new costs in order to keep Oakland Report and Newsstand free to read.
Your donation in any amount helps us continue our nonprofit work.
We also now offer sponsorships for Oakland-based organizations to support our work and get their message out — see below to learn more.

Opportunity knocks — get your message out with Newsstand
Our readers run the gamut from urban professionals to business leaders, political figures, journalists, influencers and everyday residents, with over 1.2 million views per year — and we’re growing fast.
Get in on the ground floor with Oakland’s hottest new media venture. Join our inaugural Sponsorship cohort today, and your organization will be featured in Newsstand through sponsored links, photos, and featured advertisements.
Newsstand will only accept promotions from local organizations, and will display only two sponsored links and two sponsored photos per week — less than 7% of the overall content. This gives our readers a rich reading experience, while letting your message stand out. (Oakland Report’s original articles never display promotions, and never will.) See our sponsorship page for more details and rates.
Follow us on social
This year, we significantly expanded our footprint on social media, and we’re pleased to report that over the last six months, we’ve received over 2.2 million impressions across social platforms. And we’ve only just begun.

The road ahead
We’re incredibly grateful for our readers’ support. Oakland Report was founded in 2023 as a volunteer endeavor to fill a critical gap in local independent media by producing high-quality, data-driven, unflinching articles by and for the citizens of Oakland and neighboring communities.
Our extended team includes a scientist, a librarian, physicians, journalists, attorneys, technology executives, housing providers and media personalities — all from Oakland, and all deeply committed to helping Oakland achieve its true potential as a world-class city.
We’re excited about our newest public service, Newsstand, and we hope you enjoy it, too. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or by writing to us.
Thank you.
