SEIU needs to hire a mathematician or someone with basic logic. This statement is inane: “pervasive understaffing, with more than one in five budgeted positions unfilled”blah blah blah. Do they not know that salary savings from unfilled positions can be used to help with the City’s huge budget deficit? And that it’s a way to a certain extent to reduce the number of layoffs they will ultimately have to do in order to deal with the out of control spending? Where is the budget for huge raises for them that they want going to come from if all those positions are filled? Just like the rest of the U.S., Oakland staff are going to have to learn how to do more (or at least the same) with less. And I strongly believe there is still fat to be cut from that outsized City government.

The Panthers were the worst thing that ever happened to the black community in Oakland. And now they’re celebrating them. We might as well be celebrating Felix Mitchell and the 69th St. Mob and whatever other gang warlords have ruined Oakland. This is how far-left and far-LOST the City Council has become.

I dunno Rex, the BPP was a cultural event and had some basic positive aspects worth celebrating. And though they were ideologically crippled, that was the norm for that time, same as now. I don't believe they embraced the helpless victim identity that has been washed into the brains of the woke generation. But they'd be right at home with their By Any Means Necessary mantra, which unfortunately seems to be the direction of the left wing mindset once again. I was inspired by their image as a socialist youth struggling with inequality (and my own laziness) so got tatted with a Panther in 1982 - 5500 miles away in Tooting, but didn't live here until 2009. I might go take a selfie over there. But to each their own.

There’s nothing wrong with a culturally positive event, and you are to be congratulated for wisely shedding former beliefs. The evidence that the Panthers were a violent, criminal gang that ran a protection racket against black owned businesses, beat down dissenters, and conned well meaning liberals out their money for “breakfast programs,” is overwhelming. If successful ideologically, they would have saddled the black community with a One party Marxist/Maoist state ruled from above by armed thugs. Just read their OWN writings.

Forget the romanticized version of the Panthers. Remember instead who and WHAT they actually were.
